This is
the third recording in a critically-acclaimed series entitled
Découvertes 1890-1939, which explores works by little-known
French composers. The featured artists are pianist Stéphane
Lemelin and his colleagues, violinist Anne Robert and cellist Paul
Marleyn, who together form the Trio Hochelaga. They perform trios with
piano by two leading lights of the French musical establishment at the
beginning of the 20th century : Joseph Guy Ropartz, a lawyer who
eventually gave in to his passion for music to become a full-time
musician and composer; and René Emmanuel Bâton, an
orchestral conductor whose appearances included an engagement with
Serge Diaghilev’s Ballet russes in 1912. Many of his works are clearly
inspired by his love for Brittany and Breton culture.

“A
fabulous find” – The Toronto Star
This recording is the second in a critically-acclaimed series entitled
Découvertes 1890-1939 featuring pianist Stéphane Lemelin
and his colleagues Anne Robert and Paul Marleyn, who together form the
Trio Hochelaga, performing works by little-known French composers. They
are joined by oboist Philippe Magnan and violist Jean-Luc Plourde to
perform a quartet and quintet by Théodore Dubois, a leading
light of the French musical establishment at the beginning of the 20th
century. ATMA’s 2006 recording of music by Dubois was praised for its
“finely wrought passion” by the Globe and Mail.

Théodore Dubois
(1837-1924) was a leading light of the French musical establishment at
the beginning of the 20th century. Encouraged by Franck and by Liszt,
befriended by Saint-Saëns and Widor, he aspired to carry on the
key traditions of 19th-century French music: elegance and brilliance in
style, clarity and balance in form, and discipline in harmony.
This CD is
the first in a series entitled Découvertes 1890-1939
in which, by presenting recordings of little-known composers, pianist
Stéphane Lemelin, will shed light on areas of the musical
landscape of early 20th-century France.
The first
recording by the Trio Hochelaga appeared on the ATMA label in
2004 (Pierné-Fauré: Trios avec piano). It earned a "Choc"
rating from the magazine Le Monde de la musique, and a "Supersonic
Award" from the magazine Pizzicato (Luxembourg).

“Achieving the proper balance between
understatement and firmness, the Canadian artists of Trio Hochelaga
have captured in these two equally masterful works [trios by
Pierné and Fauré] the full spirit of French music.”

Founded in
2000, Trio Hochelaga has quickly established itself as one of Canada’s
most exciting chamber music ensembles. Together, violinist Anne Robert,
cellist Benoît Loiselle, and pianist Stéphane Lemelin
share their passion for a repertoire that ranges from the Classical
period to the present. Their repertoire not only includes the great
works of the trio literature, but also makes a special place for French
music, whose neglected treasures they enthusiastically explore.
Bearing the original Iroquois name of the city of Montreal, Trio
Hochelaga has from its inception been invited to participate in the
principal music festivals of Eastern Canada, including the Festival
international de Lanaudière, the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival,
and the Orford Arts Centre Festival. In 2003, Trio Hochelaga gave the
premiere performance of Jacques Hétu’s Triple Concerto with the
Orchestre symphonique de Montréal at the Lanaudière
Festival.
