Canadian
cellist Paul Marleyn has
appeared as a soloist and recitalist throughout Europe, Asia and North
America, most notably at London's Wigmore Hall, Boston's Jordan Hall,
Chicago's Cultural Centre, and Geneva's Victoria Saal. In 1984 Paul was
chosen for a BBC TV feature titled Debut, and has subsequently
performed regularly as soloist on WGBH radio in the US, on CBC Radio in
Canada, and Classic FM and BBC Radio 3 in the UK. He recorded Haydn's D
major Concerto for DRS TV in Switzerland in 1992, and subsequently
embarked on a ten-city Swiss Tour. He has appeared as soloist with the
Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Belgrade Radio, Winnipeg Symphony,
Symphony Nova Scotia, Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, Manitoba Chamber and
European Chamber orchestras. In 1993, his first recording, Russian
Cello Sonatas, was released worldwide by United Records, and he has
since recorded for RCA Victor, CBC Records and CALA Records.
An active chamber musician, he has
appeared at the Chamber Music East, Prussia Cove, Cape Cod, Leicester
International, Ottawa International, Indian River and Norfolk chamber
music festivals, and with members of the Tokyo, Vermeer, St. Lawrence
and Hagen quartets. Since 2000 Paul has been Artistic Director of the
Agassiz Summer Chamber Music Festival and the Agassiz Chamber Players
series in Winnipeg, Canada. Paul Marleyn also has a special interest in
new music, having been a frequent guest of the prestigious German group
Ensemble Modern, and at the Centara, Almeida, Lviv Contrasts and
Donaueshinger new music festivals. Paul has commissioned new works by
Bramwell Tovey, Kevin Volans, Michael Matthews, David Raphael Scott,
Glenn Buhr, Jim Hiscott and Rodion Schedrin.
Paul is currently Professor of Cello at
the University of Ottawa, having held the same position at the
University of Manitoba from 1997-2004. Paul values teaching very
highly, and frequently gives masterclasses at the Royal Academy, Royal
Northern College, Liverpool and Belgrade Universities in Europe, the
universities of Western Ontario, Alberta, McGill and Lawrence in North
America, and the Shen Yang, Jinan and Xian Conservatories in Asia. He
has also served on the juries of Canada's Eckhardt-Gramatté
National String Competition and the Canadian National Music Festival
finals. In 1994 he was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of
Music, and in 2003 received a prestigious Career Development Grant from
the Canada Council.
In 1985, after undergraduate studies
with
David Strange at the Royal Academy of Music in London, Paul was awarded
a Fulbright Scholarship to pursue his studies with Laurence Lesser at
the New England Conservatory. He earned a Masters Degree and Artist
Diploma before completing his studies at Yale University with Aldo
Parisot.
Future engagements include appearances
at
the Pender Bay, Ottawa International and Prince Edward County
festivals, and an appearance with the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra.
In the spring, Paul will be touring the UK and China. This season he is
featured in two CD releases: one on the CBC Records label, and the
other, his latest solo disc, From Jewish Life, with Signum Records.
